Mustafa conquers the mountainConquering Antarctica's highest peak

Jordan's sole mountaineer Mustafa Mahmoud recently became the first Jordanian to climb Mount Vinson Massif, the highest summit in Antarctica at 4,897m, and has now got his sights firmly set on realising his dream of reaching the peak of Mount Everest.

Mahmoud was part of a multinational group of seven who braved the harsh environment in order to conquer the mountain. In the end, just four of them made it to the top at 8:55am local time.

“I learnt that there is no easy mountain to climb, it does not matter how high it is ... when nature is raging it is no joke... a time where there is a thread that separates life and death,” Mahmoud said.

Mahmoud was speaking from experience. As the team was about to make its final assault on the summit, weather conditions worsened. “You are in the middle of it all... 500 metres to the top... You have only two choices, to go up or down... I chose up, to become the first Jordanian to do so.”

Wonderful; Jordanians are always on top. Have you guys imagined what it feels like on the top of such a mountain ?. I have a humble experience of climbing Mount Rainier-Washington State. 14410 ft (second highest in the US-I believe). Not to the highest point though. Awesome ! Fresh air -Noiseless ( more difficult to breath as you go up though ). Putting it in few words; closer to heaven!

I would not say that Jordanians "Are always on top" jareer. Is that just your opinion or are you stating a fact?

Aw, this is so cute. With Tehran being located as high as 1800m above the sea level and surrounded by mountains, almost every Tehrani is a mountaineer. It's a favorite past-time to hit the mountains on Fridays, most immediate one, Tochal, has Telecabin access from the city to the peak (3962m ~ 13000 feet)!

Jareer,

Please do not yell at me. :(
But how can that be a fact? It just is not so. Always? Come now. I am Jordanian and I know for a fact we are not ALWAYS on top.

I am not yelling Linda- this is my normal voice level. We are on top of our successes when we are successfull, as well as on top of our failures when we fail. Isn't that a fact ?

No, not a fact. There is no way you can prove that and its obvious it is not true.
As for the yelling, I thought you were just because you were using an exclamation mark.

The whole discussion doesn't really make sense!

Onzlo,
Does your last comment represent your opinion, or a fact !

Posted by: Jareer | Jan 27, 2005 7:57:18 PM | Email this comment

Who is onzlo and why is your email address email@email.com? hehehe

I am only saying it is not "ALWAYS" true that Jordanians are on top.

And why all the yelling Jareer and Onzlo?

Moose (Mostafa) has become a good friend of mine after he met my wife and I in Nepal last year. When we met him he was "wet behind the ears" mountaineering wise; but in the subsequent year he has become the real deal. I spoke to him last night before he flew out to meet the King prior to going to Mecca and onwards to Nepal and he is really focussed. He'll do Jordan proud no matter what the outcome. He's with a strong team of Americans that will help him maximise his chances. I last climbed with him in Scotland before Christmas; he's strong and will have gotten stronger after conquering Vinson in Antartica.

I hope all of Jordan will get behind him and offer up their prayers and support. I for one look forward to seeing Moose the Everest summiteer when he returns to Scotland in the summer.

All the best Moose!!
