Model Muslims: Can Islam and a fashion career mix?
BEFORE she became famous as the young woman arrested in Bali for possession of ecstasy, Michelle Leslie was one of thousands of young Australian girls trying to make it as a model. As part of her job, she posed in bikinis and underwear, and she once was photographed astride a motorbike baring her bottom.
After her arrest Leslie adopted a more modest wardrobe. At one court appearance she wore a sarong over her head; at another, she adopted the full, black burka, the garment worn by the most devout (and the most oppressed) women in the Muslim world. Leslie's spokesman, Sean Mulcahy, says she converted to Islam at a private ceremony at a friend's house a year before she was arrested.
Yet Muslim commentators, including Australian Federation of Islamic Councils head Ameer Ali, say Leslie can't be Muslim and a model. "There's an Islamic code of dressing [that] says women must be modest," Ali says. "You can't go cat-walking with a semi-naked body. That is not allowed in Islam." But Leslie is not the world's only Muslim model; there are thousands working with the sanction of their parents and communities.
Source: [The Australian]
Eva Roslan, 22, is one example. She started modelling at 16, after getting permission from her Muslim parents. "I actually did ask my parents because it was important that they approved," Roslan says.
"They had no objection. They were actually quite worried that I was still too young and I will be influenced, that I will get into dangerous stuff, because people are saying that modelling is dangerous. So my mother, she actually followed me everywhere, from when I was 16 until I was 19 and after that she trusted me. Then she said: 'Now I think you can go on your own, just don't break the trust."'
Roslan, who was born and reared in Singapore, says her religion is important, but Muslim society in Singapore is not as strict. "There are a few models who are Muslim," she says. Roslan follows Muslim teaching, she fasts at Ramadan and prays at the mosque, "although not five times a day".
"My parents are not very strict because they believe the more they control the child the more the child will want to do the opposite," she says. "They treated me more like a friend than a child and a trust developed." Roslan say she is "very OK with swimwear and underwear" and her father "is OK with that, too. He understands that a model has a job, that you are being paid to work and that the things you wear, that is your job."
She has not posed nude but has no objection to doing so in the future, depending on what the occasion. "I haven't so far, but I think I wouldn't mind," she says. Roslan feels proud to represent Muslim women, "because there is a belief that a Muslim girl cannot be a model, cannot travel alone or cannot leave the house".
One of the first internationally known Muslim models was Iman Abdul Majid, who is married to David Bowie. The Somalian-born Iman, now 50, was reared by progressively minded Muslim parents. She was discovered at 19, living in Kenya, by photographer Peter Beard, who took pictures of her nude from the waist up, with her breasts covered by her hands and traditional necklaces.
In an interview in 1999, Iman said she knew her Muslim parents would not approve of the photographs, "known in the fashion world as artful nudes. My father would have found other words," she said. The photographer asked Iman to leave Kenya for a modelling career in the US. "But I was a Somali girl who had been raised a devout Muslim," she said. "I was a diplomat's daughter."
She was also secretly married and could not leave the country without her husband's permission, so she forged the documents she needed to get a passport and fled. She hated disappointing her father by becoming a model, a job he believed unworthy of her talents, and when her parents visited she collected photographs that showed her in any state of nudity and stored them until they left.
The father of supermodel Yasmeen Ghauri, who was born in Canada in 1971, also disapproved of her profession. Moin Ghauri is a former imam of the Islamic community of Quebec. In interviews, he has expressed strong disapproval of his daughter's chosen career. "She is still my daughter, but her actions are completely contrary to the teachings of Islam," he said in one interview. "She is doing something that encourages others to be doing bad things."
Yasmeen Ghauri has said she tried to become a devout Muslim, particularly after she once visited Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to drive or show any flesh. "I thought, 'OK, OK, I'm going to be really religious, I'm going to cut off school, I'm going to cover my head and everything.' Then I woke up and said: 'This is ridiculous, I haven't gone to hell."'
She has contracts with the Versace fashion label and Victoria's Secret, which makes bras and underpants decorated with feathers, diamantes and fishnet. But her career has damaged her father's standing in their community.
Not long after Yasmeen Ghauri became famous, rivals at the local mosque published pamphlets titled Imam in Hot Water, which asked why a person "who could not even regulate the affairs of his own family" be allowed to provide religious guidance to the wider community. Some Muslims refused to attend prayers led by Moin Ghauri. "I've been cut off," he said.
Yasmeen Ghauri responded: "I know he doesn't like it, but he can't really change it. I am sure somewhere deep inside he's proud."
Another Muslim model, Waris Dirie (whose name means desert flower), abandoned her family after her father, who was head of a Somali tribe of nomads, tried to arrange a marriage for her with a 60-year-old man. At the time, Dirie was 12. She fled to London, where she worked as a domestic servant before being discovered by model scouts while working at McDonald's.
Dirie became a successful international model and was among the first black women to feature on the cover of Vogue. More recently, she has become a prominent opponent of female genital mutilation, which her family inflicted on her. Dirie was subjected to this torture (in which the genitals are partly or entirely removed or injured with a blade) when she was five. She campaigns against the practice, particularly in Europe, where it flourishes among Muslim immigrants.
The issue of whether Muslim women can be models turned deadly in 2003 when organisers tried to hold the Miss World contest in Nigeria. The country's tourism minister, Boma Bromillow Jack, urged them to stay away from the 12 Nigerian states that enforced Islamic law. (Under sharia, women who expose too much flesh can be flogged.)
Riots broke out. Newspaper offices and Christian churches across the countryside were torched and bystanders were beaten with clubs. More than 100 people died and the event had to be abandoned. It was staged, instead, in London.
But Britain proved no safe haven for four Muslim women who entered the Miss England competition last year. Criticism from Islamic leaders quickly followed. One Muslim model, Hammasa Kohistani, 18, who was born in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, to Afghan parents, won the contest, which required the women to wear sports clothes and to sing and dance.
The imams said the women would compromise the teachings of the Koran by showing bare flesh. In response, Kohistani said: "I don't think I have done anything wrong. I have the utmost respect for the strong beliefs of the religious leaders." She said her parents were supportive and proud, "and as long as they're happy then my conscience is clear that I have done nothing wrong".
Keyser Trad, a prominent Australian Muslim spokesman, says Leslie should be free to explore and adopt the Islamic faith at her own pace. "Michelle is going through a difficult time and the fact that she's found comfort in religion is actually great news, even though people are ridiculing her for it," he says.
"She's embracing God and this spiritual journey is not always an automatic, total transformation. It's unrealistic to expect people to totally change their lives immediately after adopting a faith. It's true that the religion promotes modest dress, but there are Muslims all over the world in the entertainment industry, some in modelling, some in acting, some in belly-dancing. It's obviously a great temptation when these careers are very lucrative and exciting, and people need time to find other ways to express themselves to follow the spiritual path."
Leslie argues that how she or anyone else practises their religion is a personal affair. She is hurt by accusations that she is a "fake Muslim" who concocted the story to get out of jail. "I am a Muslim," she says. "I practise these beliefs in the best way that I can. You can be a Muslim regardless of your clothes. I know a lot of Muslim models who still do underwear and those sorts of things and they still believe in their God. They practise their religion the way they want it."
Leslie's father, Albert, is also angry, saying: "I'm Church of England and my wife is Catholic. We don't go to church ... but we live Christian lives."

IT IS VERY ANNOYING TO SEE ISLAM AS A RELIGION ATTACKING FASHION MODELS.ISLAM IS AN EVIL RELIGION AND SATANIC.REMEMBER WHAT THE WORD SAYS IN GENESIS "THAT I GOD WILL MAKE WOMAN AND SATAN ENEMIES AND HER SEED WILL DESTROY HIS SEED"IT IS SAID ABOUT JESUS WHO DESTROYED THE HEAD OF ANTICHRIST THE SEED OF SATAN AT THE CROSS.ISLAM DENIES THE FACT TAT JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD OR THAT HE DIED AT THE CROSS.ISLAM TURNING AGAINST FASHION MODELS IS NOTHING NEW WITH CENTURIES OF SUBJUGATION OF WOMANHOOD BY THIS SATANIC RELIGION.IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE FASHION MODELS ISLAM IS DESTINED TO FALL. KUDOS TO ALL FASHION MODELS AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU!

vineeth, I assume you are a Hindu. Hindu is a PAGAN religion. Islam is not evil. Islam is the true praise of God. women modelling and displaying themselves is WRONG. it is to have no respect for themselves or for GOD. Women who wear respectable clothing and who are not promiscous are respectable women. GOD/ALLAH and men have no respect for women who prostitue themselves.
You must realise that Islam is a religion which is becoming more and more popular. It is true also that the women of Pakistan (Muslim) are much more beautiful than you women of India (Hindu.) But Hindu women who cover themselves in their sari will have respect if they follow the true GOD. they have the right idea, but the wrong praise.
WE ARE NOT TERRORISTS. TERRORISM IS WRONG, AGAINST ALLAH.

vineeth what you said is part true and part false.Because the WORD itself says that women shouldnot cloth that tempt men but wear modest clothing and live godly lives.JUST LOOK AT THE LIFE OF THESE MODELS THEY AREY LIVING FOR MONEY FAME AND LUST.Of course not every one but majority is like that.So it is highly foolish for you to slash islam saying it is fighting against fashion models.BUT FACT REMAINS THAT ISLAM REJECT THE IDEA OF JESUS AS THE SON OF GODAND THAT HE DIED ON THE CROSS FOR THE SINS OF ALL MANKIND.On this factyou are right .Even most of the pagan world accept that jesus died on the cross.Centuries of women subjugation in islam also cannot be considered godly.

There is nothing wrong in women exhibiting themselves. In fact fashion models symbolises the freedom the bible and the church gives to women.Unlike in islam where thay are mocked and subjugated.Muslim women should understand that only THE WORD OF GOD that's the bible gives full freedom to women .Bible considers women and men as equals unlike Quran which considers them inferior and worthy of no praise. All this discord between women and islam is because women are under god against satan.Satanic relegions like islam are trying everything to keep women and men from knowing the truth. But they will not suceed.Time will com when truth will be established all over the world.

I'm not a fan of Islam and I find the Islamification of Britain alarming. but also I find the liberal society we have equally alarming. both in their ways are backward and uncivilised. I'm a young white English woman and find myself quite repulsed by some of the behaviour of my contemparies. extreme decadence leads of extreme reactions (in this case from Muslims.) we need to find a middle ground and bring back respect.

Islam is not a religion. Back in 7th century a clever wife of an epileptic petty thief turned his husbands seizure delusions into a cult where, hardly suprisingly, his hubby was the main man. Well almost main man, renamed pagan moongod Hubal was the real main man. Time went on and bunch of horny nomads had even more clever idea. Let's turn this cult into genitalia religion where women are nothing but walking vaginas, property of men. And the rest, as they say, is history. Too bad it's the present and the future in many backward countries too.
Read Koran, read Hadith. Discover the truth about this 'religion'. It's the #1 threat to modern world.

In The Name Of Allah The Most Gracious Most Merciful
Islam means submission to the will of Allah. A Mislim(ah) is hence the one who submits him/herself to the will of Allah. Can a non practicing person claiming to be submitters to the will of Allah remain Muslim. Well... technically yes... by the mercy and grace of Allah, as He is The Most Gracious and Merciful. However they are heedless people (ghaafil), ignorant people (jaahil), evil people (faasiks).
The people here are saying it is OK to model, show and reveal the most sacred aspect of ones self. They are wrong, and should stop their deviated propagation. If a women decide to offer their body to the thriving men, then what is left for the women to keep sacred; the capitalist system preys upon vunrable women to expose themselves and allow to be exploited for their own advantage. Islam teaches women that thay are like a pearl, hard to find, valuable, so kept hidden from the bad of its surroundings. Can you honestly allow your own daughter, mother, or anyone whom you love to be subjected to another mans desire or whims? There may be great incentives of money, no doubt about that, but the maintaining of honour and respect far out ways this incentive. Modelling is a lesser form of being a hooker/prostitution, and anyone who disagrees just needs to analyse futher. Both is for moeny, the fufilment of a mans desires and degrading of oneself, makes the boss richers (pimp). It doesn't free ones self as many here claim; it is a breeding groung for depression, suicide and a life of short-term fufilment.
The poster that claimed that Jesus was the son of God, please visit answering-chrisianity.com I mean if you really believe so, you have nothing to fear.. right? Read the bits relavent.
Women and men are both seen as equal in the sight of Allah. But as you all know, Allah created women and men evidently different, with emotional and pshychological differences aswell. So Allah has sufficed rights pertaining to both. But one is not hailed greater than the other, as a poster has suggested. One point to ponder upon, Islam is the fastest growing religon upon the west, where over 3/4 reverts are headed by women. Surely they wouldn't have reverted if it wasn't good to them?
Islam is a merciful religion, Allah is Mercigul to anyone who sincerely raises their hands. Even the models, if they repent will inshallah be forgiven. Thats all from me, Salam.

i have 2 ask a qstn wat harm has these woman who exhibit their beuty and sexiness do.do they do more harm than the misogynastic terrorist of the islam.no they are infact good in a sense .to call fashion industry a substitute of prostitution one should understand that according to rightful surveys there is more amnt of prostitution outside te fashion indstry than inside.they infact promote western culture and also christianity if properly utilised they can act as a powerful evangelistic tool.praise god and may he bless all fashion models who believe in christ

Yes, Fashion caree can mix with Islam as long it is based on Islamic Principles. Woman has the right to do fashion as long it is not exposed to every men except her husband or within women. Woman can do fashion shows but only woman can attend these shows. To be very frank with you guys, I have watched all fashion channels both western and Islamic fashion on Tv. But I choose Islamic Fashion.I ask one questoin, why there should be nudity in todays fashion. I watch Fashion TV India, Pakistan, Arabia, Europe and Russian, in all these channels, the only thing that you see is nudity. Lingerie and swimwear showed on FTVs virtually nude. I definitely reject such fashion which make women indecent. Todays Fashion takes the models towards prostitution. The question is where will it end? But I would recommend all women regardless of religion, region and ethnicity that decency is good policy for todays woman. Woman should wear something that is decent and is accepted in general by people. Todays fashion makes women more vulnerable to rape, violence and trafficking them for the purpose of Sex slave. Most of models that I have seen end up their life by making Pornograhpic movies. This is the outcome of todays fashion. Fashion is for the woman but not nudity.

How can you say that showing too much flesh isnt wrong. Even when non-muslims see others displaying their semi-naked bodies their reaction would be to make unwanted horrible remarks. It goes on all around me. People have no right to see your body and even then women complain about pervation and rape. If you want it to stop then prevent it. for example if a rapist saw two women walking down the street one with a short mini skirt and a small top and the other covering her head and body. who do you think hes going to rape? surly the women whos semi-naked. Also covering your body gains you more respect. even if it isnt the muslim clothing not showing flesh would make people repect you and look at you in the right ways, also women complain why people call them slags or sluts. just look at what your wearing that might give you a few clues. so yes dress codes are very important in society and not just in islam. Islam dosent give dress codes to forbid you from things.its to look out for you and guide you the right path. so how can you call islam cruel when you just dont know what its about. if you are going to give comments about islam then read the quran then give your opinions, because im sure that when youve read it you'll be very shocked. go on give it a go.
p.s some asked why muslims dont concentrate on mr worlds. firstly no muslim mr world has entered secondly society makes their mind up about men being better than women not islam. for example if u see two naked models 1 male 1 female your going to obviously concentrate on the female and call her all sorts.

talking about fashion and islam...nudity is never allowed in islam...this is for self pleasure

It's ridiculous when some people try to accuse islam of being unfair and satanic, while there are others who say much worse things about the religion they defend.
ok, since I've already started writing, lets mention gays marriage for example, if you ask some non-muslims who oppose it, say chrisitans, why do you oppose it ? they would try to reason that it threaten the society and its nature... etc, now I am not againts your reasoning, but if you claim the right to reason for yourself (and you know some people will totaly ridicule your view about gays), so why yo refuse this for mulsims, I mean, why you draw the line *just* after *your* religion ?
Islam has its reasoning for opposing nude posing and immodest dress, this comes from the way it sees the life nature and its purpose, and the relationships among people....
if you want to discuss religions, shouldn't people start with its basic principles and then go up stage by stage ?

mashad allah baharuddin qurbani i dont agee with saying that women are equal to men .in the bible it clearly states that man is the head of woman and god is the head of man .this is the harmonious order of natural creation.quran also agree with this.but i wantto challenge every muslim weather the fact said about jesus christ is true or false please read qoran hadith injeel and torah with an open mind to find the truth then u shall know jaus christ is the true god

Allah hates women who dont respect thier bodies and inshallah they will burn in hell!! All this fighting about God and Islam and Christianity is stupid. There seems to be one set of rules for men and one set for women. Listen God is not the author of confusion. There is one God simple as that. God loves all his children, I don't care what your religion is. As far as what a woman does it's between her and God. I can not understand why men are so worried about others going to hell. One needs to worry about the condition of their own spirit. Further more I don't believe in hell. If most people believed there was a hell, they'd act much better. Women seemed to be judged by men. Actually I believe men are afraid of women, this is the reason for the mistreatment of women worldwide. I want someone to tell me why men were raping women in ancient times? Women surly had on more clothing. Is a man so weak he can't control himself? Rapes are usually blamed on the woman. Does God set a higher standard for women? While men are not accountable for his weaknesses? The bottom line is this, a man can hardly satisfy one woman sexually much less many. The West is no better than the East. It is men who have this world in turmoil, greed, lust, drug abuse . BY the way the Muslim do believe in Jesus, they just don't deal well with the Virgin Birth. Actually a virgin birth is a alien concept for the Muslims and the Jews. We are all sons and daughters of God. It really dosen't matter how Jesus was born. Is anyone paying attention to his teachings. Is anyone paying attention to Mohommed's teachings?

qween, you said that God hates women that show their bodies. that is ridiculous! God doesnt hate people: he is the most compassionate, the most merciful. by wishing that these women would rot in hell, then you are actually gaining sins yourself. hjow could you wish such an atrocity to happen to another human being?
isis norfret, i believe that God has a bigger plan than we think. he hasn't revealed everything. and yes, we do believe that Mary was a virgin. however, we believe that jesus is not the son of God. that's pretty much the major difference between islam and christianity.
we are all one, no matter our religion, race, culture, beliefs, or sexuality. we have to start being more open-minded and accepting, and we must fight the ignorance that is eating up our society. :)

ISLAM.............EVERY ONE SHOULD KNOW THAT ISLAM TEACHES US PEACE & SELF RESPECT. ISLAM TEACHES US TO HAVE FULL RESPECT FOR OTHERS AS WELL AS SELF RESPECT. IF A WOMAN DOES FASHION FOR HER HUSBAND, ITS GOOD FOR HER & HER FAMILY TOO. SHE CAN BE WELL PROTECTED IN THIS WAY. ONE CAN EXPERIENCE IT. ONE SHOULD MADE SUBMISSIONS IF HE HAS PROPER KNOWLEDGE, OTHERWISE IT IS USELESS. THANKS & IF ANY BODY LIKE TO HAVE FURTHER DETAILS I WOULD LOVE TO GUIDE HIM/ HER. MAY ALLAH, THE ALMIGHTY GUIDE US & GIVE US POWERS.

I HOPE PEOPLE WILL READ THIS CAREFULLY:
ISLAM : is a faith as a way of life which has set its boundary - BUT DOES NOT FORCE THEM ON ANYONE, ITS A INVITATION.
FREEDOM : those who choose to do what they want such as muslim models posing nude, then that is a choice they have made.
BUT .............. you cannot say islam allows this and does not allow that from personal opinion, choices and thoughts.
YOU SHOULD BE HONEST, don't associate the two, thats were the problems start.
You cant say its allowed .... for me, or its allowed because you want to do something, rather you should say YES, I admit its something I know my faith does not allow but i still wish to do this out of choice.
Some comments are ridiculous. Everytime something does not work out right for one or he/ she gets irritated by another, why blame the faiths, blame yourselves. Faiths are clear and simple, its people who make religeon differcult to understand and pass on.
I got a modelling offer but turned it down only because I knew my faith dont allow it and I had to choose one in order to keep the other. It may sound alittle bizaare but you need to know ones faith to come to an full understanding.
from a muslim
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ.

I AGREE WITH THE ABOVE.
Not just islam but NO, religeon and i repeat NONE rooted back until now shows this all is part of faith because faith is simplicity and because we are looking at muslim models here, i'll just focus on islam for a moment and say that again modesty is not something ugly there are guidelines for those who wish to follow the islamic faith but people should ease of alittle when they come down hard on islam. If you look at enligsh women centuries ago what rights did they have? men treated them as slaves, were not allowed to work. If some did, then in Islam some did too!!!!!!!!!!

ISLAM TALKS OFF ACTIONS WHICH BENEFIT ONE SELF - HOW DOES NUDITY BENEFIT YOU, ITS JUST LUST AND PASSION, FAME AND DESPERATION TO REVEAL. If we all to start stripping there would not be much fun and enjoyment behind closed doors!!!
